What is Felt?

Felt is a textile material made by matting, condensing, and pressing fibres together, most commonly wool. This process, known as felting, involves agitating wool fibres with heat, moisture, and friction until they interlock and form a cohesive fabric.

What is Felt made from?

Felt is typically composed of wool or other natural raw materials, which generally produces the highest quality and softest fabric. Our Feltit felt is made from 100% natural wool which we source from New Zealand.

How is Felt Made?

There are two primary methods of felting: wet felting and needle felting.

  • Wet Felting: Wet felting involves layering and wetting wool fibres, followed by hand-rolling or using a machine like a rolling pin to agitate and compact the fibres. The application of heat and moisture, along with mechanical pressure, causes the fibres to bond together, resulting in a solid piece of felt.
  • Needle Felting: Needle felting is a dry felting method that uses barbed needles to repeatedly pierce and entangle wool fibres. This technique allows for sculpting and shaping wool into three-dimensional forms, making it a popular choice for creating detailed and intricate designs

What is Felt Used For?

This material has a huge range of uses with its incredibly unique texture and qualities. Needled felt is very soft making it perfect for crafts. Whereas wool blends are light and breathable but still keep you toasty during the Winter months; making them perfect for knitwear. Pure wool felt is a natural insulator and very resilient to wear and tear. It is strong and able to absorb moisture. This means it can be used for home furnishings as well as decorative items.

Felt is celebrated for its versatility, softness, and natural insulating properties. It’s commonly used for various applications, including clothing, accessories, home décor, and crafts. Felt is appreciated not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its eco-friendly and sustainable qualities, making it a favoured choice among artisans and craft enthusiasts.

Where is Felit Located?

How durable are felt products?

While the longevity of a felt product depends on factors like its intended use and maintenance, proper care can significantly extend its lifespan. Please refer to our guidance on how to take care of your felt products.

How do I clean or take care of felt products?

Caring for your felt products is straightforward and can ensure their longevity and continued beauty. Here are some general care instructions:

Dust and Shake: For routine cleaning, simply shake out or lightly dust your felt products. This helps remove loose dirt and debris.
Spot Cleaning: If you encounter a small stain or spill, you can spot clean with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. Use mild soap and warm water, and gently blot the stain. Avoid rubbing, as this can damage the fibres.
Drying: Allow your felt products to air dry if they become damp. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or high heat sources, as this can cause the wool to shrink.
Vacuuming: In the case of larger felt products like rugs, you can vacuum them. However, use a vacuum cleaner without a brush attachment to prevent any damage to the felt structure.
Rotation: For larger rugs, it’s a good practice to rotate them periodically to ensure even wear and fading.
Customized Care: Specific products may have additional care instructions, so always check any care labels or information provided with your purchase.

Can I wash felt slippers?

Yes, you can wash felt slippers, but it’s essential to do so with care to preserve their shape and quality. Here are some steps to follow when washing your felt slippers:

Check the Care Label: Always start by checking if there are specific care instructions provided with your slippers. Some felt slippers may have variations in their care recommendations.
Hand Washing: The safest way to wash felt slippers is by hand. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Gently agitate the water to create suds.
Wash and Rinse: Place your slippers in the soapy water and gently swish them around. Pay extra attention to any stained areas. Avoid excessive rubbing or scrubbing, as this can damage the felt. Once you’re satisfied, empty the soapy water, and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water for rinsing. Rinse your slippers thoroughly.
Remove Excess Water: Gently press the slippers to remove excess water without wringing them out. You can also place them between two clean, dry towels and press to absorb moisture.
Reshape and Air Dry: Reshape your slippers to their original form and size. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can cause the felt to shrink. Allow them to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area.
Maintenance: After washing, you can use a soft brush to fluff up the felt and maintain its texture.

Remember that felt is a delicate material, and excessive heat, agitation, or harsh chemicals can damage it. By following these steps, you can keep your felt slippers clean and in good condition, ensuring they provide comfort and warmth for a long time.

Will felt shrink when washed?

Felt is known for its shrink-resistant properties, especially when compared to traditional fabrics like wool. However, while felt is less prone to shrinking, it’s not entirely immune to changes in size under certain conditions. Here are some important points to consider regarding the potential for felt to shrink when washed:

Hot Water and Agitation: The most common cause of shrinking in felt is exposure to hot water and excessive agitation. When felt is subjected to hot water and vigorous movement or rubbing, the fibres can interlock and contract, leading to a change in size.
Proper Care: To minimize the risk of shrinking felt items, it’s essential to follow care instructions carefully. Many felt products are best washed by hand in lukewarm water to avoid exposure to high temperatures and excessive agitation.
Air Drying: After washing, always allow felt items to air dry naturally. Avoid using a tumble dryer or exposing them to direct sunlight or high heat sources, as these can contribute to shrinking.
Wool Content: The specific type of felt and its wool content can affect its response to washing. Felt with a higher wool content is typically more resistant to shrinking.
Preventive Measures: If you’re concerned about potential shrinkage, consider spot cleaning or gentle hand washing as an alternative to full immersion washing.

To maintain the size and shape of felt items, it’s crucial to follow proper care instructions, use mild cleaning methods, and ensure they are dried gently and naturally.

Can felt go in the washing machine?

Felt items can be washed in a washing machine, but it’s VERY crucial to do so with great care and follow specific guidelines to prevent damage or shrinking. Here are some key points to consider:

Read Care Instructions: Always check the care label or any specific care instructions provided with the felt item. Some felt products may have variations in their care recommendations.
Machine Settings: If machine washing is recommended, use a gentle cycle with cold or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can contribute to shrinking.
Use a Laundry Bag: Placing the felt item in a laundry bag or a pillowcase can help protect it from excessive agitation and friction during the wash.
Mild Detergent: Use a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach.
Limit Spin Speed: Select a lower spin speed or choose the “no spin” option to prevent excessive wringing and reduce the risk of damage.
Short Wash: opt for a shorter wash cycle to minimize the time the felt item spends in the water.
Air Dry: After washing, it’s essential to air dry the felt item naturally. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as the heat and agitation can lead to shrinking.
Reshape: While the item is still damp, reshape it to its original form to maintain its shape and size.
Spot Cleaning: In many cases, spot cleaning or gentle hand washing is a safer and more effective option for cleaning felt items, as it reduces the risk of damage.

Remember that felt is a delicate material, and even with careful machine washing, there is always some risk of damage or shrinking. If you have concerns about washing a specific felt item, consider spot cleaning or consulting a professional cleaner to ensure its longevity and quality.
